Day 132 - Customer What???

Several days ago, my portable modem that I've had for a couple of years, went kerpluie. Yes, spell check, I KNOW it's not a word, but I'm going to use it anyway - shut up. Anyway, I called the store where I'd bought it because I had two questions. One, how much was a power cord - in case that was all the problem was and two, how much was the actual modem itself - in case it was more cost effective to replace the whole damn thing.
The phone rang and rang and rang and rang and, yes, you guessed it, rang some more. Finally the machine picked up. I left my name, number and my questions and hung up. This was at 10am. Now I'm not going to fault them for not answering their phone. I've done it myself, when I'm in the middle of something and I can't stop what I'm doing, I let the machine pick up and then I call the client back when I'm free, which is usually in an hour or so. So whatever, I figure that's the game here.
I didn't get a call back until the next morning. The store closes at 5:30pm. I find it hard to believe that in the intervening seven and a half hours, someone couldn't return my call. But I'm a reasonable person, so okay. Unfortunately, when they called, I happened to be in the bathroom - that ALWAYS happens to me - and I missed it, so I got a nice message from Russ. When I tried to phone Russ back, surprise, surprise, the phone rang and rang and rang and yes... that. Only this time, it didn't go to the answering machine. I tried several times over the day and FINALLY got Russ.
I proceeded to ask him my questions and at the time it seemed like not only were we not on the same page, we were reading totally different books. He kept insisting my modem MUST be this particular whatever and I kept TRYING to tell him it was not, but he was having none of it. Apparently, I don't know what kind of modem I have. So finally I said, why don't I bring it to you and then you can see what kind it is and you can tell me if you have one in stock. That was agreeable to him
So today, I went there. I went in and said, I was talking to you yesterday and I brought my modem in for you to look at. I went to take the modem out of the bag I had carried it in when Russ promptly informs me that oh! he knew what modem I was talking about and no they don't carry those. Okaaay. That's not what he'd said yesterday. Meanwhile Russ is blathering on about how nobody uses those any more and would I like to buy an updated model, having no idea that I'm totally thinking about suffocating him with the plastic bag the modem is in.
I mean really. Is my time less valuable than his? I wasted money and time getting there and it was all for naught. Why couldn't he say they don't carry that kind of modem when I was on the phone. Why make me come all the way down to his store. Did he really think that having got me there by nefarious means, I'd be happy to buy something from him???
He's a fool if that's the case.
The story does have a happy ending though. When I got home, I phoned Rogers and they're going to ship me out another modem.
