I have come to the conclusion that the same reflex that allows smokers to live with themselves, is the same one that allows people to not know they're asphyxiating their neighbours. I've always been sensitive to fragrances. It doesn't really matter if they're good ones like perfume or bad ones like ammonia. In stores I have to detour around the perfume department. However, with the onset of my lung issues, the problem has become a bit more annoying.

Last week at work I went out to check the mail and my boss' neighbour was leaving her place as I was going back in. Our doors are side by side so when she passed by me, she was maybe six inches away. Honestly, I am surprised I did not see a physical cloud of perfume billowing around her. It was like walking into a wall. My lungs immediately seized up and I had to stumble inside for my inhaler so I could breathe.

On Monday night, we had a co-op meeting. I was sitting in the back row. I don't know WHO in the room was the guilty party. I suspect it was the same lady as I saw her a few rows ahead of me to my right. Anyway, I wasn't in the room five minutes when my cough reflex was triggered. I was really tempted to leave. I think I coughed off and on for about fifteen minutes. I SHOULD have left because I developed a migraine.

Tonight, I went out with a friend. Or I was supposed to. She picked me up and we went to her house so she could shower and change and then we were going to go. While I waited, the aroma of smoke seemed to fill the whole room. I know her husband smokes but it was like he'd been smoking in the house with the windows closed for ten years the odour was so strong. Then my friend came out from getting ready. Again I was hit in the face by a wall of perfume. I promptly asked for some Tylenol because I was JUST starting to get over the migraine from Monday night and this situation did not bode well. Half an hour later, we had to leave the restaurant almost as soon as we got there. She ended up having to take me home instead of going out to dinner I was so nauseous.

So I guess this is a public service announcement. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, watch what you put on your body. I don't think people realize how it builds up by the time you use a scented shampoo, a scented body wash or soap, body lotion, perfume, powder etc.. I think the layering effect increases the potency of each scent.
