Day 99 - My Mom
Apr. 9th, 2011 12:47 pmSo for three people that follow my journal, I think I've babbled a time or three about my mom and her health and memory whatnots and how I've been having no luck getting her to see a doctor.
Whelp. As of yesterday she's in emergency. Apparently, she woke up yesterday with a nose bleed that wouldn't stop. So her gentlemen friend took her to emergency AND JUST LEFT HER THERE I might add, but at least he called me.
I spent about six hours there yesterday, the upshot of which is that now its on the record that she has dementia. She didn't know what year it was; she didn't know where she was; she told the doctor she'd been retired for a couple of months. I talked to her for a few hours before the doctor came around and she kept telling me I'd been out of school for a few years. I've been out of school nigh onto twenty three years now. She didn't know where I worked and for about half an hour we talked about me in the third person. She did remember who I was when the doctor asked her though. Probably because I'd told her shortly before he came in.
Her nose bleed was a result of her overdosing on her blood thinners. She also over medicated herself on her thyroid pills. The doctor figures thats why she lost so much weight. Added to the not eating properly. She'd stopped taking her blood pressure pills so her blood pressure was 200/175. They're going to keep her a few days to stabilize everything and then they're going to put in a referral for an in home care thing because she can't be trusted to take her medicine properly.
That will be fun because while she's loopy, she's also BLOODY HARD HEADED. I had to keep stopping her from getting out of bed. She kept fiddling with her iv line and trying to disconnect the monitor cables. The other problem is that while she's mentally not all there, she's still mobile, so if they're expecting her to stay docilely at home waiting for the nurse to come around three times a day to give her her pills, that's pretty damn unrealistic.
Will have to see what's the scoop with that. As crappy as it is now, it's actually the best thing that could have happened because now I don't have to fight with her about going to see the doctor about her memory. It's now on file. And it has a name.
It's called Vascular dementia. Unlike Alzheimer's dementia, Vascular dementia is caused by strokes. Apparently, back in 2008, she had a mini stroke and that was the start of it. Which makes sense because it was in 2009 that I began to notice the memory problem. It's irreversible because it's damage to the brain and not just a chemical imbalance.
So that's that. At least now I have confirmation of my suspicions.
