Day 76 - Ow!
Mar. 17th, 2011 10:21 pmSo. I've just had a day and a half of poking myself with a needle to test my blood sugar. The machine is quite nifty. You just stick the strips in. They have a code thing at one end that tells the machine to turn on and what not. And the other end has a a little notch that just sucks the blood up. You don't even have to touch the blood to the strip. The strip just vacuums it up. Then the machine spits out your number.
I got the pharmacist to give me a run through when I got it and he set the lancet thing to medium, which was OW! So for the next three tries I was all poke - OW! Poke - OW! Poke - OW! Then I thought this is ridiculous. I'm going to try the lowest setting and see what that's like. Boy am I glad I did! It's like poke - ow. Much better. I have to squeeze a little harder to get the blood out but the strip doesn't need a huge drop of blood to work. Something else they don't tell you.
I do feel a bit like a biohazard though. What with the used needles and bloody strips. The pharmacist was kind enough to give me a large pill vial to dispose the used stuff in. I forgot it at work though, so for the last couple of pokes, I've just wrapped them up in some plastic.
