Day 22 - He Shoots! He Scores!
Jan. 22nd, 2011 10:35 pmToday I went to my first hockey game.
Things I learned:
1. You can never have too many layers. I wore a long sleeved heavyish shirt, a sweater, a jacket, woolen pants, wool socks and sturdy shoes and I was STILL freezing. It wasn't bad while there was still a decent amount of people in the arena but as people left, they took the body heat with them. Brr.
2. They play music. VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY LOUD MUSIC.
3. Eat before you go. The line ups are very very long; the food is very very expensive and very very crappy. My friend's sister bought nachos which consisted of a bag of nacho chips and a small plastic thing of spicy simulated cheese. Yum. Yum.
4. The Canadian National Anthem is the most boring anthem ever. It's no wonder they always get fancy singers to do it at games and such. It's because it's so dreadfully dull they have to spice it up with special choreography where as other countries anthems you could probably pull some average joe off the street and get them to do it and people wouldn't fall asleep because the words are actually interesting. They had a local opera singer perform it and he was quite good. He also skated around the ice, which was very neat.
5. People are pigs. After the game as we were leaving I was APPALLED at how much garbage people left behind. What really pissed me off was that about 50% of it wasn't even stuff that was sold at the arena. People had brought in food from other sources and then left their junk behind. And sure they pay people to clean up but I dunno... It just seems wrong to me.
So about the game itself. This was a special game, which was why I decided to go. It was the Old Richmond Sockeyes playing the current Richmond Sockeyes team. The final score was 7 to 6 for the younguns.
If the old geezers had not goofed off the first period I think they would have won. They let the young guys get two goals in the first period and then in the second period both teams scored goals so they were at 6 to 3.
In the third period it was like the old guys finally woke up because all of a sudden they started scoring goals. They scored three goals in the first five minutes and then it was a battle royal for that last goal. They even pulled their goalie. In the last five minutes they got close so many times but the young goalie did a good job and a lot of the time the puck bounced off the frame of net.
Then in the last like second they got off a shot and it looked like it was going to go in but the buzzer rang before it slid across the line. Dems the breaks I guess.
All in all it was a fun evening.
