Day 63 - Service
Mar. 4th, 2010 11:12 pmOne of the definitions of service is an act of helpful activity. I think if I ever have my own company, that would be its mandate.
As much as I like crunching the numbers, my favourite part of the job is taking the figures back to the clients and saying okay you're up here because of this and you're down here because of that and maybe you might want to try this or that to continue the upward trend or halt the slide.
Yesterday, I chatted at length to one of our denturists clients. His lease is coming due and he was commenting that he'd been in that spot for 15 years and I said was he thinking of doing something different. He went ??? So then I said, well if your lease is running out in the next couple of years, it would be a good time to change things. WELL! It was like the heavens opened. He was well I've always wanted to do this! And we have some property here, do you think we could do that? And he just talked and talked and I inserted things as needed and after about half an hour he was all whoa, I didn't even know I had that inside me. So now we just have to figure out how to accomplish the goal.
And today I met with one of our construction clients. He's in his mid twenties and freshly incorporated so we chatted about that and about how being incorporated will affect his personal tax. And then he talked about the different job sites and I gave him some tips on streamlining the record keeping on his end and by the time we finished a another half an hour was gone.
But I wouldn't consider it wasted time. I like listening to their hopes and dreams and plans and working with them to find ways to make that happen. To me THAT'S what being a bookkeeper is about. To me it's more than just mindless data entry and spitting out figures and then handing people a bill.
